How to pack organic coffee properly?

Coffee is the 3rd most consumed drink in the world. However, to enjoy a good coffee, it is essential that it is well packaged. Whether it's organic coffee beans, ground coffee, capsules or pods, each type of packaging has its advantages and disadvantages. So, how to choose organic coffee?

A well-packaged coffee preserves its aroma and freshness. Also, to appreciate each cup in the long term, it is essential to store it well, thanks to several precautions. Let's take stock.

Why is proper coffee packaging important?

Since coffee is composed of volatile substances, it is important that it be well conditioned, otherwise its attributes will disappear.

Different factors can alter the quality of coffee. Therefore, to preserve the quality of coffee, it is very important to apply the best packaging methods. Among the elements that alter the quality and flavor of organic coffee, oxygen is at the top of the podium. In fact, in contact with air, and therefore oxygen, coffee oxidizes and loses its volatile substances. Moisture is also to be avoided, as coffee absorbs it strongly, to the point that it can become moldy, lose its flavors or change its taste. Coffee should also be kept away from any source of heat and light, as these two elements also degrade its quality and influence its flavors.

In order to preserve coffee and enjoy its delicate aromas over the long term, it is important to prevent the various elements mentioned above from interfering with the freshness of this highly appreciated drink.

Preserve the coffee's aromas

Organic coffee, regardless of its form (ground, in pods or capsules), is above all organic coffee harvested from beans. Its aromas, flavor and intensity come from the roasting of the beans. The more the bean browns, the more intense it becomes. Roasting allows the beans to develop their aromas. Indeed, during the roasting process, the aromatic oils of the coffee are released and create the aromas that lie dormant in the heart of the coffee bean.

However, since oil tends to go rancid when it comes into contact with air, it is essential that the coffee be protected from any element that could alter its taste. This is why the coffee must be placed in an airtight, dry environment, away from the light. Finally, during the grinding process, the bean keeps its flavour, but coffee lovers will prefer coffee beans to ground coffee. The preservation method is the same for all forms of coffee, but bean coffee is known for its great flavors and intense notes.

How to store your organic coffee?

Whether it's organic ground coffee or coffee beans, most coffees are sold in an airtight bag. Once the coffee is opened, many people keep it in its original packaging, making sure to close it with a clip. However, this is a very poor method of preservation. Although the package appears to be closed, this method allows air to circulate, and as mentioned before, air oxidizes the quality of a tasty coffee.

To preserve and maintain the properties of an excellent organic coffee, there are several possibilities for coffee lovers.

An airtight container

In order to prevent the coffee's volatile substances from escaping, it is essential to place the coffee in an airtight container after opening it. The container can be of any size and shape, but it must be airtight.

To preserve the aromas, coffee can be stored in a metal, ceramic or glass container. For the latter, however, dark glass is preferable. An airtight but transparent container will not allow the volatile substances to escape, but it will also allow light to pass through. As light contributes to the deterioration of coffee, it must be kept in a dark or opaque container. However, a transparent jar may be suitable if it is kept in a cupboard and/or in the dark.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that coffee should be kept in a cool and dry place, between 10°C and 25°C. Therefore, it is not advisable to store coffee near equipment that generates heat (oven, kettle, hotplates, etc.).

A coffee can

There are boxes on the market specially designed for packaging coffee. They are available in all colors and designs. These boxes are designed to preserve all the properties of the product. In addition, the box can be chosen according to individual tastes and appear as a decorative element of the kitchen.

Preconceived ideas about coffee conservation

The refrigerator is sometimes used to store and preserve coffee. However, the cold and humidity in the refrigerator deteriorate the beans, ground coffee and flavors. In addition, the coffee may absorb moisture and become moldy. If the container is not completely sealed, the coffee will absorb any odors present. This is an option in the event that the temperature rises above 25°C and the coffee is likely to dry out.

Aluminum is said to be the material that completely insulates food and coffee from oxygen. However, this claim works when the original package has not been opened. Then, the coffee must be transferred to a container designed for this purpose. No matter how thick or how good the coffee package is, it cannot be stored in it after opening.

To summarize, in order to enjoy the aromas and properties of coffee, it should be kept away from air, moisture, light and heat. Furthermore, when buying coffee, it is advisable to buy small packages. Indeed, a coffee that has been stored for many months, even when properly preserved, loses its taste and aroma over time. Organic coffee, whether in beans, ground coffee, capsules or pods, is a very good product, known for its more intense flavors than coffee from non-organic agriculture. Thus, by opting for an optimal conservation, each cup will remain the most tasty.
