All you need to know about ground coffee

Ground coffee is the most common type of coffee on the market. It is different from coffee beans and is sold in the form of powder more or less fine. To choose your coffee, it is important to know its properties, to know everything about the exceptional coffee and especially to be able to recognize it.

Because of its shape, ground coffee has some advantages, but also some specificities. It is also very important to know how to prepare ground coffee, in order to extract all its flavors.

Understand what ground coffee is

What is ground coffee? Before looking at the advantages and methods of preparing ground coffee, let's zoom in on the history of this form of coffee and its properties, to better understand how this coffee has become the most widespread in France today.

The history of ground coffee

Initially, coffee was consumed through a decoction of whole beans and a little hot water, but as the beans were allowed to dry, man realized that roasting revealed more of the coffee's aromas. However, whole roasted coffee did not reveal all the flavors contained in the beans. This is how man started to grind them.

With the help of two stone millstones, it was then possible to obtain a more concentrated powder. Once in Europe, the old pepper mills were reused to grind coffee. With time, the process was improved to allow the creation of different calibers of grinds, adapted to different coffee machines.

Flavors of ground coffee

Ground coffee is nothing more than coffee beans, reduced to a more or less fine powder depending on the calibre of the grind. Thus, there are as many types of ground coffee as there are coffee beans.

Mocha, Arabica, Robusta, it is possible to taste various flavors of ground coffee, originating from South America, Asia or Africa. All these ground coffee flavors can be adapted to the preferences of each person.

The advantages of ground coffee

But then, why choose ground coffee to prepare your own coffee? If bean coffee is very appreciated for keeping the aromas as long as possible, ground coffee has many advantages that explain why this form is the most widespread on the market.

Ground coffee: accessible and fast

First of all, it is very easy to prepare your drink with ground coffee. There is no need to grind your own coffee. Moreover, the ground coffee is offered in a way to adapt its grind size to a type of coffee maker, which is very practical to avoid having to fumble and try different calibers. The ground coffee can therefore be prepared quickly, and this advantage is certainly the most important for those in a hurry.

Since ground coffee is the most widely available, it is much easier to obtain. This coffee is appreciated by the majority of people and is available in many different forms, including ground coffee. This is a clear advantage to be able to enjoy your favorite coffee without having to worry about it.

Finally, ground coffee is accessible to most people, because its price is not higher than that of coffee beans, despite the advantages it brings. Moreover, ground coffee does not require a coffee grinder or other accessories and coffee makers, which can represent a more or less important investment. Ground coffee costs much less than coffee capsules, knowing that it is possible to control the amount of coffee used to avoid waste.

A coffee compatible with many coffee makers

Another advantage of ground coffee is that it can be used with many types of coffee makers. Thus, by choosing a suitable grind size, it is possible to prepare your coffee in pre-ground form, with :

  • a filter coffee maker ;
  • an Italian coffee maker;
  • a piston coffee maker.

It is even possible to prepare espresso coffee with ground coffee. Thus, this form of coffee can be suitable for most people.

Organic and ecological ground coffee

Finally, ground coffee is a more ecological coffee, as long as you choose it well. It is indeed possible to choose organic ground coffee that respects the environment and does not use chemicals for its culture. Thus, the organic ground coffee is both beneficial for the planet, but also for the health of the consumer.

Ground coffee is also more ecological than coffee in capsules, which produces a lot of waste. To consume coffee in a more responsible way, ground coffee can be a very good alternative.

How to choose ground coffee?

To enjoy a good coffee, it is imperative to know how to choose it. This also applies to ground coffee. This form of coffee being the most widespread, there is a multitude of different vintages on the market.

Quality and flavors sometimes differ a lot depending on the coffee, that's why it is important to know the different criteria to choose your ground coffee.

Choose your ground coffee according to your coffee maker

The fineness of the ground coffee has an important impact on the result of the extraction of the drink. Therefore, you must choose your ground coffee according to the preparation method, so that the calibre of the grind is adapted to the coffee maker used.

Fortunately, as mentioned earlier, ground coffee can be used to prepare coffee with different types of machines. However, this advantage can lead to doubt in the consumer's choice of ground coffee. However, pictograms on the packages of ground coffee help to avoid mistakes and to choose the right type of coffee.

When brewing with a filter coffee maker, the grind size of the ground coffee should be comparable to powdered sugar. The infusion is then ideal, since the water can flow freely and completely, allowing the coffee to deliver all its aromas.

With a plunger coffee maker, the size of the ground coffee to be chosen must be larger. The coarser grind will not pass through the filter of the plunger coffee maker. The coffee is immersed in hot water for a few minutes, which extracts all the oils contained in the coffee.

To make ground coffee with an Italian coffee maker, you need to choose a grind that is fine enough to let the water flow from the tank, but still large enough to prevent the coffee from passing through the holes in the filter. The ideal grind is finer than that used for filter machines, but coarser than that used for espresso machines.

In fact, to choose a ground coffee suitable for an espresso machine, you must choose a very fine grind. The ground coffee for espresso is the finest sold on the market. This fine grind is necessary because of the pressure exerted to extract the coffee. Very fine ground coffee for espresso offers a maximum contact surface.

Choose your ground coffee according to your taste preferences

If you have to choose your ground coffee to fit your coffee maker, the second criterion of choice is the consumer's taste preferences. Any type of coffee can be found in ground form, so it is possible to choose your favorite type of coffee to find all the aromas of a specific vintage or a specific origin.

Thus, robusta ground coffee is ideal for coffee drinkers who prefer a bitter, full-bodied and caffeine-laden drink. Arabica in its ground form, on the other hand, will satisfy those who prefer a light, but aromatically rich coffee. For a happy medium, there is even ground coffee made with blends of arabica and robusta.

The origin of the coffee and its cultivation methods also have an impact on the taste qualities of the coffee. Coffee grown on the plains is generally fuller-bodied, while coffee grown at higher altitudes has a rich and complex mouthfeel.

How to prepare ground coffee?

Choosing the right ground coffee is no longer enough to be sure of preparing a tasty drink. If choosing the right grind is essential to ensure that it is adapted to the coffee maker, it is important to know certain information to use ground coffee properly.

How to prepare ground coffee with a filter coffee maker?

To prepare ground coffee with a filter coffee maker, follow these steps:

  • Fill the water tank according to the number of cups to be prepared;
  • Fill a good quality filter with the ground coffee (12 g per cup on average);
  • turn on the machine and wait for the end of the infusion.

It is recommended to form a cone with the grind in the filter without packing it.

How to prepare ground coffee with an Italian coffee maker?

With an Italian coffee maker, the preparation steps are as follows:

  • Fill the compartment with the ground coffee (on average 7 g);
  • fill the water tank with cold water and screw the two parts of the coffee maker together;

  • load the filter with at least 7 g of ground coffee;
  • Pack the grind with a tamper, or a spoon if not;
  • attach the filter holder to the machine ;
  • Allow the water to warm up before starting the extraction.

As mentioned before, the grind used for an espresso must be very fine in order to achieve the desired result.
